Quick answer: 2-way stretch fabric stretches in one direction (usually across the width). 4-way stretch stretches in both directions — width and length. For swimwear, dancewear, leotards and activewear, choose 4-way stretch, because the fabric must move with the body in every direction. For garments that only need give one way, 2-way stretch works and often costs less.
What “2-way” and “4-way” mean
2-way stretch gives along a single axis — most often selvage to selvage. 4-way stretch gives along both axes and returns to shape. Both rely on spandex (elastane) blended with a base fiber like nylon or polyester; the difference is in the knit and yarn orientation. (See our spandex glossary for terms.)
When to use 2-way stretch
Structured garments needing give one way, waistbands and trims, budget projects, and some linings and backings.
When to use 4-way stretch
Swimwear (stretch and recover in all directions), dancewear & leotards (full range of motion), activewear & leggings, and cosplay bodysuits. Browse milliskin, metallic spandex, and athletic mesh.
How to test stretch direction
Pull a swatch side to side, then top to bottom. If it stretches meaningfully both ways and springs back, it’s 4-way. If it gives one way only, it’s 2-way. Also check recovery — good fabric snaps back rather than staying stretched.
