Description
Black Plain Stretch Velvet from Stretchhouse is the cornerstone fabric for dramatic, classical costume making — the fabric behind theatrical villains, gothic fashion, dance principals, and any garment that demands a luxurious, commanding presence. The plush velvet pile absorbs and reflects light in a way that no other stretch fabric can replicate, creating a dimensional, living surface that photographs beautifully and reads with authority from stage and screen.

About This Velvet
Plain Stretch Velvet (VLT1301) is a solid-color, uniform-pile velvet on a polyester spandex base. Unlike crushed velvet (where the pile is permanently deformed in an irregular pattern), plain velvet has a consistent, upright pile direction — creating a smooth, uniform surface with the deep, light-absorbing quality that velvet is prized for. The pile direction creates a subtle color shift depending on the viewing angle and direction of the pile — standard velvet behavior that adds to its visual richness.
At 380 GSM, this is one of our heavier fabrics — it has significant body and structure. The 2-way crosswise stretch provides enough give for comfortable wear and construction while the substantial weight gives the garment a drape and presence that lighter fabrics can’t achieve.
Best Uses for Black Plain Stretch Velvet
Theatrical and Stage Costumes: Black velvet has been a theater costume staple for centuries — it reads as wealth, power, and drama from any audience distance. Used for villain costumes, royalty, classical theatrical roles, and any character requiring a commanding, formal appearance.
Gothic and Dark Fashion: For gothic, Victorian, and dark aesthetic fashion, black velvet is the defining fabric. The pile absorbs light rather than reflecting it — creating a matte-to-soft-sheen surface that photographs dramatically.
Dance Costumes: Used in ballet, contemporary, and theatrical dance costumes where a rich, luxurious aesthetic is required. The 2-way stretch is compatible with slow, controlled dance movement — though it has less range than 4-way stretch fabrics, making it better suited to non-acrobatic dance styles.
Fashion Garments: Velvet tops, fitted blazers, skirts, and fashion dresses. The 2-way stretch provides enough ease for comfortable wear in fitted garments without the full 4-way performance of a dancewear fabric.
Holiday and Seasonal Apparel: Black velvet for formal holiday events — velvet dresses, evening jackets, and formal accessories.
Important: 2-Way Stretch Note
Plain Stretch Velvet (VLT1301) has a 2-way stretch (crosswise only), not 4-way. This means it stretches across the width but not along the length. Design patterns accordingly — the crosswise stretch accommodates body curves and ease, but the garment’s length is not elastic. This is a different construction from our other stretch fabrics and affects pattern selection and layout.
Care and Sewing
Always cut velvet in one direction, following the pile nap — cutting against the nap direction will result in color variation across the garment. Mark the nap direction on each pattern piece before cutting. Use a walking foot for even feed. Clips rather than pins where possible to avoid pile marks. Press on the wrong side on a velvet board to protect the pile. Machine wash cold on delicate, hang dry.

I found this velvet a little on the shiny side but, none the less, a great piece of velvet fabric. I also liked the weight of the fabric
